Antenna choice - Bullet or Smart?

If the GPS antenna run is greater than 80 meters we recommend using the active ‘smart’ Trimble antenna rather than the Trimble bullet antenna.  Usually if the installation is in a truck we recommend the Bullet,  if it is in a building then we use the Smart antenna.

The Trimble Bullet Antenna is a 5V device connected over coax to the GPS receiver in the Mentor RG.  It is important to follow the coax cable type recommendations in the XL / RG User Guide.

The Trimble Smart Antenna has the GPS receiver built into the antenna and the RS422 data is sent back over a multicore cable (can be CAT6E) to the Mentor RG GPS card.  As the data is RS422 the cable run can be 200 meters plus.
