Wireless: Can a Tempest Beltpack supply phantom power to a wired electrec microphone?
Question: I have a Tempest 2400 system. For my application I only need to transmit audio not receive. Therefore Ihave a two-part question:
1. Can I use a condenser microphone (can the unit provide phantom power)?
2. What is the proper wiring (pin to pin) for XLR 3 pin to your 4 pin?
Answer: The Tempest beltpack is only capable of supplying +4Vdc on the headset connector pinouts 4-pin XLR connector. Most condenser microphones using a 3-pin XLR connector require 48Vdc phantom power to work correctly due to the internal electronics in the microphone handle. The internal wiring of the wired microphone would have to be bypassed in order to use it with the Tempest beltpack. An easier alternative to using a condenser microphone would be to use a dynamic wired 3-pin XLR microphone as there is no phantom power issue to deal with.
The 4-pin XLR connector on the Tempest beltpack will only accept an unbalanced microphone audio input, that is one side of the balanced input would have to be wired back to the ground pin of the wired microphone. The mic hot is pin 2, the ground is pin 1 on the 4-pin XLR connector on the Tempest beltpack.
