Partyline: I have an RS-501 beltpack with a mic gain switch labeled "D" and "E", what does that mean?

Question:  Picked up some 501 single channel belt packs at a sale. On the back of the units there's a switch in the lower right hand corner. One of the packs has D-E printed on it instead of the usual H-L? This pack with the D-E on it will run a headset with condensor mic when wired according to your 4 pin layout and the switch in the E position. The blank panel is still in place where the 1/4 jack would be if it had the "Carbon Mic" option. Is this pack with the D-E on it a "Custom" piece that was made for a special application, or can the other normal H-L packs be converted to run a headset with an Electret Condensor Mic?
Answer:  This RS-501 beltpack has been modified to work with either dynamic or electret headset microphones.  The "D" refers to DYNAMIC microphones and the "E" refers to ELECTRET microphones.  The beltpack must be opened to access the jumper for Electret mic option:
For the RS-501: JP7
FACTORY DEFAULT: Open
CLOSED: Will put approximately 5 VDC at .5 mA on pin 2 of the headset jack and reduce the gain of the mic pre-circuit.
This is suitable for most electret headset microphones. (An attenuating circuit may be needed for some models.)
Note: The mic-level switch must be in the low "L" position (relabeled "E")
See page 4 of the attached RS-500 series user manual for more details of the operation of this feature.
