Partyline: How to set the audio levels between different intercom systems to sound the same.

Different intercom systems can have different audio levels. Therefore when connecting them together some time has to be spent -getting the levels balanced so that users on system #1 are at the same level as the users on system #2 when they are talking to each other.  A normal situation would be connecting a wireless intercom system to a wired party-line system. When listening at a wired beltpack we want the audio level of the other wired beltpacks to sound the same as when a wireless user is talking.  Example let’s look at using a Clear-Com DX-210 wireless beltpack system connected to a Clear-Com Encore Party-line system.(see attached)

*the customer can use a PK-7 or other any other Clear-Com power supply or Main Station to drive the partyline system

Step #1: Adjust the audio levels on the Wired beltpacksTalk into the first RS-601 hard wired beltpack while listening on the second RS-601 hard wired beltpack. Set a reference listen level using the volume control on the second beltpack. The reason we don’t set the reference on the same beltpack is that the sidetone adjust (which is on the side of the beltpack) also affects how loud you hear yourself.·

Set the volume controls for all the other RS-601 beltpacks to be the same as second RS-601·

Set the mic level (and sidetone) of the first RS-601 to be the same for all the other RS-601 beltpacks Tip: make sure your using the same headset types on both beltpacks, as different headphones can have different ear/ mic impedances

Step #2: Adjust the audio levels on the Wireless beltpacks. Talk into the first BP-210 wireless beltpack while listening on the second BP-210 wireless beltpack. Set a reference listen level using the volume control on the second beltpack. Adjust the mic gain on the first BP210 while talking loud, to make sure the mic limiter does not cut off the talker.  However try to keep the mic gain set to as low as possible to avoid excess pickup. If the mic gain is set too high it will allow too much background noise and mask out the talker. The reason we don’t set the reference on the same beltpack is that the sidetone adjust also affects how loud you hear yourself.·

Set the volume controls for all the other BP-210 beltpacks to be the same as second BP-210·

Set the mic level (and sidetone )of the first BP-210 to be the same for all the other BP-210 beltpacks

Tip: the sidetone on the talking Beltpack should also be adjusted to the lowest setting acceptable by the user.Tip: make sure your using the same headset types on both beltpacks, as different headphones can have different ear/ mic impedances

Step #3: Adjust the party-line input / output levels of the DX-210 basestation Connect the DX-210 basesation to the Encore wired PL system Enable and set the appropriate 2W channels on the DX-210 base and AUTO-NULL the DX-210 basestation.

Step #3a: Adjust the DX-210 OUTPUT level While listening on the first RS-601 wired beltpack - Talk from the second RS-601 beltpack At the same time talk from one of the BP-210 beltpacks Adjust the output level of the DX-210 basestation so that the BP210 is heard at the same level as the RS-601

Step #3b: Adjust the DX-210 INPUT level While listening on the first BP-210 wireless beltpack - Talk from the second BP-210 beltpack At the same time talk from one of the RS-601 beltpacks Adjust the input level of the DX-210 basestation so that the BP210 is heard at the same level as the RS-601

The overall system is now balanced (for your voice) some adjustments may need to be made once all the users are connected  The basic principles of this process can be applied when connecting any2 different systems using either PL or 4wire connectivity The same is true if interconnecting Encore / DX / Tempest / CellCom/ FreeSpeak or Eclipse to each other.

Tip: If one of the units has a mic peak meter then use this to set the mic gain level correctly so that while talking the peak meter is just hitting the red (top) occasionally.
