Matrix: How do I activate a static ethernet address / connection on a Windows 7 PC with a virtual XP platform?
Question: I have a working Eclipse frame running ECS 5.1.3 installed at our news facility. The windows XP PC with the ECS 5.1.3 software crashed and had to be replaced with a Windows 7 PC. Per your directions we installed ECS 5.1.3 on a virtual XP platform, it installed properly but we can't access the frame via an Ethernet connection. Can you advise us how to setup the virtual Ethernet port on the XP platform?
Answer: After installing ECS 5.1.3 onto the virtual XP platform the user will have to setup the Ethernet port on the XP platform with a static IP address on the same subnet as the Eclipse frame. To setup the IP address:
1. Go to the Start menu / control panel in the virtual XP platform and select "Network Connections"
2. Find the Local Area Connection (Ethernet port) and right click on it to access the drop down menu and select "Properties"
3. From the Properties screen select and highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click on "Properties"
4. From the properties screen click on the "use the following IP address" and enter in the static IP address and Subnet Mask data that coincides with the Eclipse frame, then click on "OK"
5. Close the open Ethernet port dialog screens.
6. From the virtual XP screen select "Tools" drop down menu and select "Settings"
7. From the virtual PC settings dialog screen highlight the "Networking" from the left hand side and change the setting from Shared Networking to the name of the Ethernet adapter designated for that specific computer.
8. Click on "OK" to finish the setup process.
9. To verify that the IP address on the frame can be accessed click on the XP start menu and select "Run" and type in CMD and click on "OK"
10. From the Dos prompt screen type in minus quotes "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" and press the enter button (xxx's representing the frame's IP address). If a good Ethernet connection has been established there should be up to four confirmation pings.
11. Open ECS 5.1.3 and upload the frame configuration to complete the process.
