Wireless: T-LP1 / Tempest Belt Station Batteries Not Charging After Storage
Question:
We have several Tempest wireless Belt Stationsthat have not been used in a year. When attempting to charge the T-LP1 Lithium Polymer Batteries in the charging station, the amber light continuouslyflashes and they will not take a charge. What should I do to get the batteries to charge back up?
Answer:
First, try to charge the batteries in the belt station via the wall charger.
Let the units sit in the off position for several days if necessary. Lithium based rechargeable batteries do not like to be completely discharged.
The safety circuits kick into keep the chemistry stable. Once they are fully discharged it may take sometime on the charger to get the batteries back to a state where they can charge normally.
Like all Lithium based rechargeable batteries, Tempest batteries will slowly lose recoverable capacity while sitting on the shelf. It is recommended that any Lithium based rechargeable battery be stored at 40-50%State of Charge (SoC) at something close to room temperature or below for best results. If stored at 50% SoC at 25°C (75°F) for one year, the estimated recoverable capacity is 96%. Cooler temperatures produce better results and warmer temperatures produce lower recoverable capacity. If the same battery was stored at 100% charge the estimated recoverable capacity is 80%.It is conceivable that a Tempest battery (or any otherLithium based rechargeable battery) stored at 100% SoC for one year at higher temperatures could lose a large amount of recoverable charge (50% or more). This would be an extreme condition set though, and not recommended. If stored properly, Tempest batteries may be stored for a year or more with very little if any negative impact to capacity or charging If you can’t find the original wall-wart that came with aTempest Belt Station then you can use a mini-USB charger but it will take longer: You can use a mini USB (not the now more common microUSB) but there is a pin that needs to be shorted to get full current which won’t be on a generic charger. It should work though. It just might take longer.
If after trying the above troubleshooting, and the batteries still will not charge, you may need to obtain new batteries by contacting your normal Clear-Com channel.
