Wireless: What is the purpose of ZSync technology in Tempest Seamless Roaming?
Question: We are linking two Tempest 2400 version 3.0 systems together to create two Seamless Roaming zones. We noticed that part of the system setup requires a powered dongle that connects to one of the base stations and a linking ribbon cable between the two base stations. What is the purpose of the powered dongle?
Answer: ZSync technology has been developed to enable Tempest Seamless Roaming and to greatly enhance the performance of non-roaming multiple BaseStation Tempest installations. ZSync technology supersedes former BaseSync technology. To achieve any additional benefit from ZSync technology, radio firmware version 1.18 or higher is required whether the system will be used in a roaming or a non-roaming application and use of the powered dongle or ZSync generator is mandatory to provide the ZSync reference signal.
ZSync technology provides a zero sync reference that coordinates the hopping patterns of all connected Base Stations. This has numerous positive effects. In roaming configurations this allows the Beltpacks to know exactly what frequency a given Base Station is operating on at any given time. This allows for very fast detection and switching from one Base Station to another.
In addition to enabling fast detection and switching in roaming systems, ZSync combats turn-on to turn-on variation in non-roaming applications. ZSync technology ensures that there is a fixed relationship between all of the Base Station radios every time the system is powered up irrespective of random time variation in power up sequences. Assuming that the Network Numbers for the Base Stations have been set properly, there will be virtually no unit to unit interference even with up to 11 Base Stations in a system. This is true for roaming as well as non-roaming applications.
