Matrix: How can I check if a Eclipse Matrix port is passing audio properly in both directions?
Question: I have an Eclipse Pico frame running ECS 5.1.3, I have a 4wire "direct" port setup as the SA (stage announce) port doesn't seem to be passing audio to the speakers in the studio. How can I verify if this direct port is passing audio outbound to the studio amplifier and speakers?
Answer: The easiest way to verify if a port on the frame is passing balanced audio either inbound to the frame or outbound from the frame would be to substitute another known working direct port for the suspect port on the frame.
Say for example you have another direct port that supports a Tempest wireless system and is using this direct port on the frame to the Tempest system 4-wire PL port, you can temporarily disconnect the CAT-5 cable from the suspect SA port on the Pico frame, then move the CAT-5 cable supporting the Tempest 4-wire connection on the Pico frame to the suspect SA port on the frame. Using a Tempest beltpack to listen, have someone talk on a frame panel with the SA key toggled to the talk position and listen to the audio on the Tempest beltpack, if the SA audio is heard on the Tempest beltpack then the outbound audio path from the SA port is good.
Same procedure for checking the inbound path, have someone talk on the Tempest beltpack and then have someone toggle a listen for the SA key on a frame panel, if the audio is heard on the panel then the inbound audio path at the frame SA port is good.
Once the SA port inbound and outbound audio paths are determined as good, the user can check the downstream wiring path to determine where the issue is, say a break in the cable, mis-wired patch bay or a mis-wired RJ-45 plug for example.
