Matrix: How do I adjust the GN / HS mic gain and sidetone on a ICS-92 panel?
Question: I have several station operators that aren't speaking loudly enough into the gooseneck mic or headset mic on our ICS-92 panels. How do I adjust for more mic gain? Also how do I adjust the sidetone gain on the headset, I don't see any software adjustment on ECS 5.2 cards and ports / advanced settings for the ICS-92 panels?
Answer: You have two options to adjust the GN / HS mic gain on the ICS-92 legacy panel:
1. There is an internal adjustment on the ICS-92 main pcb, it is marked “P1” and it has an adjustment range of approximately 10db. Remove the top cover from the panel, use a small blade screwdriver to adjust the mic gain as desired (fully CCW is minimum gain settings and fully CW is maximum gain setting). However, if two panels are talking to each other at the same time with the panel microphone gain set to maximum, feedback may occur even if the speaker mute is set to maximum. In this case, it will be necessary to turn the panel microphone gain down. Similarly, in some noisy environments it may be necessary to turn the panel microphone gain down and have the operator talk more closely into the microphone. Re-install the top cover when done.
2. From ECS software Cards and Ports menu / advanced settings column / level adjustments / input volume would need to be bumped up from 0db default setting (slider range is -45db to +15db), when done perform an apply changes to frame.
To adjust the headset mic sidetone there is an internal adjustment control on the ICS-92 panel main pcb, it is marked "P2 Sidetone" and the control can be adjusted from no sidetone to full sidetone. Remove the top cover from the panel, connect a headset to the panel, activate a talk key and talk into the mic and adjust the P2 control until the desired level of sidetone is heard on the headset. Re-install the top cover when done.
For location of the P1 and P2 internal adjustment controls see the diagram below:
